Campaign Overview
AB-84 threatens the future of California’s charter students and educators. As an educator, I’ll travel to Sacramento to urge Assembly Democrats to reject this bill and preserve opportunities for students to thrive and for dedicated teachers to innovate. Support my trip to defend our students, educators, and the schools they rely on!

Campaign Description

Why I’m Opposing AB-84

I’m a math teacher whose company provides educational services exclusively to California charter schools. Like many in our profession, I hope to teach full-time at a charter school because these schools value innovation, flexibility, and putting students first.

This bill strikes at the heart of what makes charter schools so valuable for California families and students. As a math educator who supports charter students every day, I witness firsthand how personalized learning, enrichment opportunities, and flexible academic programs change lives. AB-84 would slash funding for non-classroom-based charter schools and take away the ability to offer customized learning plans or unique enrichment options that students depend on. If passed, this bill could force many schools to close or drastically cut back the very programs that let students and teachers thrive, putting my own career, and educational opportunities for thousands, at serious risk.

What I Will Do

AB-84 is currently on the Assembly floor, and its next likely stop is the Senate Education Committee, a key point where the bill's fate will be decided. The committee has 7 members, and the bill needs at least 4 'Yes' votes to advance. With the Republican Senators expected to oppose the bill, the outcome will hinge on the votes of Democratic members, and on sharing real stories about how AB-84 would affect students and educators.

Once AB-84 is referred to the Senate Education Committee, I plan to travel from Buena Park to Sacramento to meet personally with the relevant Democratic members and urge them to vote NO.

The Democratic members I'll request meetings with are:

  • Chair Sasha Renée Pérez (SD 25)
  • Christopher Cabaldon (SD 3)
  • Dave Cortese (SD 15)
  • Lena Gonzalez (SD 33)
  • Eloise Gómez Reyes (SD 29)

I will reach out to each of these Democratic committee members to request meetings, and guarantee in-person conversations with at least two of them. My goal is to build relationships, provide real-life perspectives from California educators and families, and hopefully persuade enough members to vote 'No' or abstain, making the difference in the committee.

How the Money is Being Spent

The money raised will be used for a plane ticket, Uber, and food. I am trying to get a flight back the same day to reduce costs and will be picking the exact day I go based on flight prices to reduce costs.

Your support will help me make the strongest possible case to these decision-makers before the crucial votes.

This project was updated on May 26th because the bill moved out of the Assembly Appropriations Committee. If AB-84 is sent to a different committee instead of Education, any funds raised will be used to meet with members of that relevant Senate committee.
