Project Description
Why I’m Opposing AB-84
I’m a math teacher whose company provides educational services exclusively to California charter schools. Like many in our profession, I hope to teach full-time at a charter school because these schools value innovation, flexibility, and putting students first.
This bill strikes at the heart of what makes charter schools so valuable for California families and students. As a math educator who supports charter students every day, I witness firsthand how personalized learning, enrichment opportunities, and flexible academic programs change lives. AB-84 would slash funding for non-classroom-based charter schools and take away the ability to offer customized learning plans or unique enrichment options that students depend on. If passed, this bill could force many schools to close or drastically cut back the very programs that let students and teachers thrive, putting my own career, and educational opportunities for thousands, at serious risk.
What I Will Do
AB-84 passed the Assembly Education Committee on a party-line vote and is now moving to the powerful Appropriations Committee. With 15 members, if the bill gets fewer than 8 'Yes' votes, it stops there. Most Republicans are likely to vote 'No', so the outcome will come down to key Democrats—and to real stories about what this bill means for students and educators.
That’s why I'm traveling from Buena Park to Sacramento to personally lobby Democratic Assemblymembers and urge them to vote NO on AB-84. My goal is to meet in person with as many Democratic committee members as possible, but due to scheduling constraints, I can only guarantee meetings with at least three of them.
Democratic Members of the Assembly Appropriations Committee I plan to request meetings with include:
Chair Buffy Wicks (AD 14)
Dr. Joaquin Arambula (AD 31)
Lisa Calderon (AD 56)
Jessica M. Caloza (AD 52)
Sade Elhawary (AD 57)
Mike Fong (AD 49)
Mark González (AD 54)
Gregg Hart (AD 37)
Blanca Pacheco (AD 64)
Gail Pellerin (AD 28)
José Luis Solache Jr. (AD 62)
I’ll reach out to every one of these Democratic members, and guarantee to make in-person meetings with at least three. If schedules permit, I’ll meet with more. I’ll share firsthand stories about how AB-84 threatens students, teachers, and educational innovation. My goal is to persuade them to flip their votes or abstain, making the difference in committee or on the floor.
If the bill advances before the campaign ends, I will use the funds to meet with three of the appropriate members of the next committee/floor.
Your support will help me make the strongest possible case to these decision-makers before the crucial votes.
How the Money is Being Spent
The money raised will be used for a plane ticket, Uber, and food. I am trying to get a flight back the same day to reduce costs and will be picking the exact day I go based on flight prices to reduce costs.
