Interscholastic sports: gender equity.

Assembly Member Sanchez's interscholastic sports legislation would require the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) to modify its governing documents to prevent pupils assigned male at birth from participating on girls' sports teams in secondary schools.

The measure alters the existing framework wherein CIF operates as a voluntary organization overseeing interscholastic athletics and reporting on gender equity compliance. Under current law, CIF submits reports to legislative committees and the Governor regarding participation rates by gender and Title IX compliance efforts. The proposed changes would mandate specific eligibility restrictions through amendments to CIF's constitution, bylaws, and policies.

The bill's provisions would supersede any conflicting regulations through an explicit override clause, while maintaining CIF's broader administrative and reporting duties regarding interscholastic athletics. The measure requires no new appropriations and places implementation responsibility with CIF leadership.
