Assembly Members Jeff Gonzalez and Wallis have put forward legislation requiring the California Department of Transportation to conduct a comprehensive safety study of State Highway Route 74, examining a decade of accident data and enforcement patterns to develop targeted safety recommendations.
The mandated study, due by December 31, 2027, will analyze multiple safety metrics including accident rates, injuries and fatalities, tire blowout incidents from road conditions, truck tractor incidents, and Vehicle Code violations. The department must also examine transportation corridors used to bypass enforcement facilities, documenting associated hazards and identifying high-risk areas along these alternate routes.
Based on the collected data, the department will develop recommendations addressing highway safety improvements, enhanced enforcement measures, and road maintenance needs for Route 74. The recommendations must also propose solutions for enforcement facility bypassing on surrounding roadways. The department will submit its findings and recommendations to the Legislature by the end of 2027, with the study requirements set to expire on January 1, 2029.
