Talking points:
AB 84 still poses a serious threat to charter schools—especially those that support independent study, homeschool families, and parent-directed education. It limits educational choice.
It creates new restrictions on enrichment and makes it harder for families to access educational services that are tailored to their children’s needs.
The bill also makes it harder to open or renew charter schools, even in districts where families are actively seeking alternatives. Schools in smaller or rural districts could be blocked purely because of size, not based on actual demand or student outcomes.
The proposed budget cuts have gone from 30% to completely defunding certain programs, which will lead some charter schools, homeschool programs, and service vendors to completely shut down.
